George Howell Coffee

Overview

Founded in 2004, George Howell Coffee is the current expression of a much longer influence on American specialty coffee. Its roots reach back to The Coffee Connection, the pioneering Massachusetts café and roasting company built beginning in the 1970s around the idea that coffee could be treated with the seriousness of wine. After The Coffee Connection grew to 24 cafés and was sold to Starbucks in 1994, that work shifted toward coffee-producing countries, farmer economics and quality competitions. It helped lead to the creation of the Cup of Excellence in 1999, one of specialty coffee’s most important systems for identifying exceptional lots and connecting producers with international buyers. George Howell Coffee emerged five years later as a return to roasting, sourcing and the pursuit of exceptional coffees themselves.

That history remains visible in how the company operates today. George Howell Coffee centers its program on single-estate and carefully defined regional coffees, with an emphasis on terroir, producer craftsmanship and direct sourcing. The company visits many of the farms it buys from, uses a quality-based pricing model, and preserves green coffee through specialized storage, including freezing and GrainPro, to slow seasonal degradation. Coffees are generally roasted with a light touch intended to preserve sweetness and origin character rather than impose dominant roast flavors.

From its Massachusetts roastery, the company now supports cafés, wholesale customers and online subscriptions while continuing to place education and quality research at the center of the brand. Within third-wave coffee, George Howell Coffee is notable not simply as a contemporary specialty roaster, but as a continuation of ideas about origin transparency, producer recognition and coffee terroir that helped establish the foundation for much of today’s specialty-coffee culture.
