Stumptown Coffee Roasters
B-corp
Single origin
Portland, OR
Overview
Stumptown Coffee Roasters began in 1999, when founder Duane Sorenson opened the company’s first café on Division Street in Portland, Oregon. The space had previously been a beauty parlor called Hair Bender—a name Stumptown adopted for the signature espresso blend that remains one of its best-known coffees. From its Portland roots, the company grew into one of the most influential names in American specialty coffee.
Stumptown is known for carefully roasted single-origin coffees and blends, along with an emphasis on long-term relationships with coffee producers. The roaster began working directly with Guatemala’s Aguirre family and Finca El Injerto in 2003, helping establish the relationship-focused sourcing model that became central to its identity. Today, Stumptown sells coffee online, through subscriptions and wholesale partners, and at its cafés. The company was acquired by Peet’s Coffee in 2015 but continues to operate under the Stumptown brand.
